All’illustrissimo e reverendissimo signore e padrone onorandissimo Giovanni Pietro Carafa, in Roma.
Illustrissimo e reverendissimo signore e padrone mio onorandissimo,
Una grande folla cluttered the road, so as to prevent the march to proceed expeditiously. Before entering the hotel Johanniterhof between the wings of the crowd, Luther looked around with eyes of demon shouting "God is for me." Nearby, the Swan hotel, had been taken by the Prince Elector of Saxony and his advisers. From the first hours of his residency, he began a coming and going of the gentry, burghers and magistrates, but none of the most important figures of the Diet has sought to compromise with the visibly Monaco. Except the young Landgrave Philip of Hesse, which referred to Luther subtle questions about sexual mores in Babylon , receiving from them a severe reprimand. The Prince Frederick
saw him only in public session. Moreover
not in public session on 17 and April 18 were held the real shops, as well as in private conversations and in some events that occurred during the stay of Luther at Worms. As your Lordship will know, despite the aversion fueled by the young Emperor Charles against Monaco and its argument, the Diet failed to retract it, or to take the necessary steps before crashing in the events. This is because of cleverly orchestrated moves by some mysterious supporters of Luther, among which I believe I can count the Elector of Saxony, even if you can not say with absolute certainty, because of the underground and obscure nature of these operations.
- On the morning of April 19, the Emperor Charles V
summoned voters and principles they should take a firm stand on Luther, expressing its regret to them for not having carried out vigorously against the rebels since monaco immediately. The Imperial Emperor confirmed the safe conduct of twenty-one days on condition that the friar preached during the journey back to Wittenberg. In the afternoon of that day the principles and voters were called to deliberate on the request imperial. The condemnation of Luther was approved by four out of six votes. The Elector of Saxony certainly voted against it, and this was his first and only open event on behalf of Luther.
- The night of 20 "were posted by unknown assailants in Worms, however, two posters: one contained threats against Luther, the second stated that 400 nobles had promised with an oath not to abandon the" just Luther "and to declare their enmity to principles and Romans and first archbishop of Mainz.
This occurrence has cast a shadow on the Diet of a religious war and a party Lutheran ready to rise. L ' archbishop of Mainz,
Why, Lord, my illustrious? I believe, even at the suggestion of the Elector Frederick, to gain more time.
- As a result, between 23 and 24 there was a great alternative mediators to reconcile the rift between Luther and the Holy See, represented here by the Archbishop of Trier Worms.
- 25 held a private meeting, without witnesses, between Luther and the Archbishop of Trier, as expected, has frustrated all the diplomacy of the two previous days. Privately Luther, as he had revealed during the sessions of the Diet in the presence of the Emperor, he refused "to conscience" to recant his thesis. He then laid down a break unbridgeable and definitive. In those hours on the streets of the city there were rumors of an impending arrest of Luther.
- The same evening, were noted two figures come into the room wrapped in cloaks of Luther. The hotel manager recognized them as Feilitzsch and Thun, the advisers of the Prince Elector Frederick. What has been developed during the meeting the night? The SV can perhaps be answered in the events of the following days.
- The next morning, 26, Luther left the city without the noise of Worms, with a small escort of his noble supporters. The next day was in Frankfurt on 28 in Friedberg. Here he led the imperial herald to let go it alone. On May 3, Luther left the road and continued the journey to secondary roads, citing as a reason to change the itinerary a visit to his relatives near the town of Mohra. He also led his fellow passengers to go directly to another carriage. Witnesses said that when he resumed the journey from Mohra was alone in the car with my colleague and Amsdorf Petzensteiner. After a few hours the car was stopped by several men on horseback who have asked the driver who was Luther, and recognized him, took him by force and carried away with them in the bush.
your worship will be evident that it is impossible not to see Frederick, Elector of Saxony, dietro a tutto questo macchinare.
Si respira l’aria the battle, my Lord, and the fame of Luther's growing every day. The news of his abduction has triggered panic and unspeakable agitation. Even those who did not share his view, now gives him a powerful voice in the reform of the Church. A great religious war is about to erupt. The seeds scattered Luther, who was kidnapped by the force of conviction, are about to bear fruit. Disciples eager for action get ready to draw, with fearless logic, the consequences of his thoughts. If sincerity is a virtue, perhaps your Lordship will allow me to say that Luther's protectors have already achieved the goal of transforming a battering ram against Monaco in the Santa See, organizing around him a large following of people. And now, they are just waiting for the opportune moment to do battle in open field.
I do not need to say more than that in VS kiss your hands and that I wholeheartedly recommend.
